And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ {which} [is the spirit of prophecy]. Rev 12:17,19:10

“The enemy of souls has sought to bring in the supposition that a great reformation was to take place among Seventh-day Adventists, and that this reformation would consist in giving up the doctrines which stand as the pillars of our faith, and engaging in a process of reorganization. Were this reformation to take place, what would result? The principles of truth that God in His wisdom has given to the remnant church, would be discarded. Our religion would be changed. The fundamental principles that have sustained the work for the last fifty years would be accounted as error. A new organization would be established. Books of a new order would be written. A system of intellectual philosophy would be introduced. The founders of this system would go into the cities, and do a wonderful work. The Sabbath of course, would be lightly regarded, as also the God who created it. Nothing would be allowed to stand in the way of the new movement. The leaders would teach that virtue is better than vice, but God [or his authority] being removed, they would place their dependence on human power [worldly conference leaders], which, without God, is worthless. Their foundation would be built on the sand, and storm and tempest would sweep away the structure. Who has authority to begin such a movement? We have our Bibles. We have our experience, attested to by the miraculous working of the Holy Spirit. We have a truth that admits of no compromise. Shall we not repudiate everything that is not in harmony with this truth?” 1SM 204,205

Over 100 years ago, Satan made a plot to destroy the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Here it is: [Satan speaking]We will … lead them [Seventh-day Adventists] to conclude that the requirements of Christ are less strict than they once believed, and that by conformity to the world they would exert a greater influence with worldlings. Thus they will separate from Christ; then they will have no strength to resist our power, and erelong they will be ready to ridicule their former zeal and devotion.”

[Note] This graph is not exhaustive in covering the issues below, but it will give you an honest look into what Ellen G. White and the Adventist Church historically taught concerning these issues. Besides, this the chart will also give you a view of the new theologies that are contradicting our historic doctrines. Many of the teachers of these new theologies do have a few quotes from the Bible or Spirit of Prophecy to seemingly support them and give some plausibility to their “hard speeches” (good arguments) that were predicted in Jude 1:15. But these “hard speeches” do not hold water since it is an almost undeniable fact that historically the Adventist Church or Ellen White never promoted these theories. If you have further questions about any of this material, please ask me and I will provide you with more documentation. My main endeavor in this paper, though, is to encourage you to diligently study these issues out for yourself and make your calling and election sure!

Spirit of Prophecy

More authority than church leaders or popular opinions.

Good for devotions but not an absolute authority.

Nature of Christ

“Be assured that Jesus, the Prince of life, has been tempted in all points like as we are, yet without sin. He overcame in his human nature in order that you might have before you the power of his example.” YI, September 6, 1894 par. 2

Had a different nature than us, and had no real temptation to ever sin, except maybe in the wilderness.

Overcoming Sin

“God works and man works. Resistance of temptation must come from man, who must draw his power from God. On the one side there is infinite wisdom, compassion, and power; on the other, weakness, sinfulness, absolute helplessness. God wishes us to have the mastery over ourselves. But He cannot help us without our consent and co-operation.” AA 482

God does it all, little or no effort on our part is required!

How sin effects our relationship with God.

“Let none deceive themselves with the belief that God will pardon and bless them while they are trampling upon one of His requirements. The willful commission of a known sin silences the witnessing voice of the Spirit and separates the soul from God. Whatever may be the ecstasies of religious feeling, Jesus cannot abide in the heart that disregards the divine law. God will honor those only who honor Him.” SL 92

If we have a relationship with God we can willfully sin and still be in Christ.

Separation from the World

“The reason we have had so little influence upon unbelieving relatives and associates is that we have manifested little decided difference in our practices from those of the world.” FE 289

A terrible hindrance to the proclamation of the gospel! We should try to be as much like the world as we can so we’ll be “culturally relevant”.

Sabbath Observance

“We must be guarded, lest the lax practices that prevail among Sunday keepers shall be followed by those who profess to observe God's holy rest day. The line of demarcation is to be made clear and distinct between those who bear the mark of God's kingdom and those who bear the sign of the kingdom of rebellion.” 6T 353

Lightly regarded

Dress Reform

“Obedience to fashion is pervading our Seventh-day Adventist churches and is doing more than any other power to separate our people from God. I have been shown that our church rules are very deficient. All exhibitions of pride in dress, which is forbidden in the word of God, should be sufficient reason for church discipline.” 4T 647

“When one commandment of the Decalogue is broken, the downward steps are almost certain. When once the barriers of female modesty are removed, the basest licentiousness does not appear exceeding sinful. Alas, what terrible results of woman's influence for evil may be witnessed in the world today!” AH 58

Non-essential for the most part. Standard equals that of the world.

Judging issues and practices

“We, as workers, must be united in frowning down and condemning everything that bears the least approach to evil in our associations with one another. Our faith is holy; our work is to vindicate the honor of God's law, and is not of a character to bring anyone down to a low level in thought or in deportment.” 5T 592

Never criticize any thing or any body! But beware of those evil minded watchdogs!

Church Discipline

“The names of those who sin and refuse to repent should not be retained on the church books, lest the saints be held accountable for their evil deeds. Those who pursue a course of transgression should be visited and labored with, and if they then refuse to repent, they should be separated from church fellowship, in accordance with the rules laid down in the Word of God. . . .” 5BC 1096

Church discipline is unloving, and will drive people away!

Health Reform

“The controlling power of appetite will prove the ruin of thousands, when, if they had conquered on this point, they would have had moral power to gain the victory over every other temptation of Satan. But those who are slaves to appetite will fail in perfecting Christian character.” CD 59

Mostly non-essential except maybe for a few guidelines on no smoking, alcohol, or unclean meats.

“The Holy Spirit never reveals itself in such methods, in such a bedlam of noise [music with drums, etc]. This is an invention of Satan to cover up his ingenious methods for making of none effect the pure, sincere, elevating, ennobling, sanctifying truth for this time.” MAR 234

Drums and wild music allowed and often promoted.

Makeup and Jewelry

“Self-denial in dress is a part of our Christian duty. To dress plainly and abstain from display of jewelry and ornaments of every kind is in keeping with our faith.” CG 423

Woman’s Liberation / Rights

“Those who feel called out to join the movement in favor of woman's rights… might as well sever all connection with the third angel's message.” 1T 421

Often involved in

Medical Drugs

“Drugs never cure disease. They only change the form and location.” 2SM 451

Country Living

“To parents who are living in the cities, the Lord is sending the warning cry, Gather your children into your own houses; gather them away from those who are disregarding the commandments of God, who are teaching and practicing evil. Get out of the cities as fast as possible.” CD 400

Often Discouraged

Joining the Military

“I was shown that God's people, who are His peculiar treasure, cannot engage in this perplexing war, for it is opposed to every principle of their faith. In the army they cannot obey the truth and at the same time obey the requirements of their officers. There would be a continual violation of conscience.” 1T 361

Smoking + Drinking

“We do not take into the church those who use liquor or tobacco. We cannot admit such ones. But we can try to help them to overcome.” TE 165

Often Winked at

Who are our Church Leaders?

“Shall those who do not heed the divine counsel be acknowledged as leaders in the Lord’s institutions?—God forbid. How can we regard as safe guides those who manifest a spirit of unbelief, and who, in words and character, fail of revealing true godliness?” OFC 243

Any ordained minister or church leader is God’s anointed and is speaking the words of God!

“There is a spurious experience that is prevailing now everywhere in regard to the love of Jesus--that we must dwell on the love of Jesus, that faith in Jesus is all we need--but these souls must be instructed that the love of Jesus in the heart will lead to humility of life and obedience to all His commandments. "He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him" (1 John 2:4). The love of Jesus that goes no farther than the lips will not save any soul, but be a great delusion.” TDG 299

How much of Ellen G. White’s writings are really inspired? “You have talked over matters as you viewed them, that the communications from Sister White are not all from the Lord, but a portion is her own mind, her own judgment, which is no better than anybody else's judgment and ideas. This is one of Satan's hooks to hang your doubts upon to deceive your soul and the souls of others who will dare to draw the line in this matter and say, this portion which pleases me is from God, but that portion which points out and condemns my course of conduct is from Sister White alone, and bears not the holy signet. You have in this way virtually rejected the whole of the messages, which God in His tender, pitying love has sent to you to save you from moral ruin. . .” 3SM 68

But those who teach new theologies in our church often talk a lot about Jesus and his love; is this not proof that they are of God? “Some who claim to love Jesus are deceivers and all their religion is lip service. It does not transform the character. It does not reveal the inward working of grace. They do not show that they have ever learned in Christ's school the lessons of meekness and lowliness of heart. They do not show by life or character that they are wearing Christ's yoke or lifting Christ's burdens. They are not reaching the standard given them in God's Word, but a human standard. Their life is not pure like Christ's life. They are not being refined and ennobled by His Spirit. The way of truth they have not known, and they are of that number who will say, "Lord, Lord, open unto us. We have taught in the streets. We have done many wonderful works." But Christ will say of them, "I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity" (Matthew 7:23).” TDG 299

If all these new theologies are wrong, why are many of our ministers teaching them? Many will stand in our pulpits with the torch of false prophecy in their hands, kindled from the hellish torch of Satan. If doubts and unbelief are cherished, the faithful ministers will be removed from the people who think they know so much. Let no soul complain of the servants of God who have come to them with a heaven-sent message. Do not any longer pick flaws in them, saying, "They are too positive; they talk too strongly." They may talk strongly; but is it not needed?.” SpTA11 8.1,2

But these new theology teachings are bringing so many new members into the church!

If you lower the standard in order to secure popularity and an increase of numbers, and then make this increase a cause of rejoicing, you show great blindness. If numbers were evidence of success, Satan might claim the pre-eminence; for in this world his followers are largely in the majority. It is the degree of moral power pervading the college that is a test of its prosperity. It is the virtue, intelligence, and piety of the people composing our churches, not their numbers, that should be a source of joy and thankfulness.” 5T 31

It takes many years for people to learn and grow; we can’t change too fast or it might cause us to loose some members! “If those who have been in the church for weeks and months have not learned the straightness of the way, and what it is to be Christians, and cannot hear all the straight truths of the Word of God, it were better that they were cut off from Israel. It is too late in the day to feed with milk. If souls a month or two old in the truth, who are about to enter the time of trouble such as never was, cannot hear all the straight truth, or endure the strong meat of the straightness of the way, how will they stand in the day of battle? Truths that we have been years learning must be learned in a few months by those who now embrace the Third Angel's Message.” 1MR 33

If I follow the example of the majority of the members and leaders of the church which are in good and regular standing, I will be a good, balanced, and saved SDA, won’t I ?

“It is a solemn statement that I make to the church, that not one in twenty whose names are registered upon the church books are prepared to close their earthly history, and would be as verily without God and without hope in the world as the common sinner. They are professedly serving God, but they are more earnestly serving mammon. This half-and-half work is a constant denying of Christ, rather than a confessing of Christ. So many have brought into the church their own unsubdued spirit, unrefined; their spiritual taste is perverted by their own immoral, debasing corruptions, symbolizing the world in spirit, in heart, in purpose, confirming themselves in lustful practices, and are full of deception through and through in their professed Christian life. Living as sinners, claiming to be Christians! Those who claim to be Christians and will confess Christ should come out from among them and touch not the unclean thing, and be separate. . . .” ChS 41

“The greatest want of the world is the want of men--men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall.” Ed 57
